Welcome to Mission San Diego de Alcalá. California’s first mission was founded on July 16, 1769 by Saint Junípero Serra, a Franciscan priest. The Mission was relocated to the present site in 1774 in order to be closer to the American Indian (Kumeyaay) villages, a reliable source of water and good land for farming.
The first of a chain of 21 missions that stretch northward along the coast of California, Mission San Diego became known as the Mother of the Missions.

FROM THE PASTOR: Dear Parishioners, I am pleased to share with you the news that Cardinal McElroy has assigned Fr. Daniel Holgren as associate pastor of the Mission San Diego de Alcalá, effective July 1, 2024. Ordained a priest in June 2021, Fr. Holgren currently serves as associate pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Bonita. At the same time, I am also pleased to say that Fr. Raymond Philip Napuli will continue to serve as associate pastor of the Mission San Diego through June 2025. Finally, Fr. Bill Springer, now retired and a priest in residence, will continue to live at the Mission San Diego and assist with Masses, confessions, and sick calls as his schedule permits. Lenten blessings, Fr.
